Sunday 10th April 2011

Many thanks to DHPC coaches Peter and Sara S for taking me under their wing and showing me the ropes at Windbank. Other DHPC members were there too so it was great to meet people on the hill and not just in the monthly club nights. Lots of experience to draw on and everyoone was very friendly.

It was my first post CP day out and I was apprehensive but keen to break my duck in a safe way! While waiting for the wind to come on the hill I practiced reverse launches. Later when the wind was suited to my experience, and encouraged by Peter, I made the leap and soared for some time before electing to bottom land near the car. Awesome!

A great day out for my first post CP experience!

A long time since my last post, but then I do have a good excuse!

I have passed the Club Pilot exam and flight tasks with the paragliding school, which enables me to fly in the club environment. Obviously help from the club coaches will be vital in the next steps of my novice flying career.

I would like to thank Dean Crosby of Active Edge paragliding school. His patience and teaching skills are legendary, and I can more than vouch for that. If you are thinking about taking up the sport I could not recommend Dean highly enough. Thanks Dean!

More groundhandling

Out with Dean and Craig last week to Wether Fell for a day. Despite the forecast for winds too strong for me, we spent most of the day waiting for the wind to pick up! It wasn't strong enough for soaring the ridge so I spent most of my time ground handling the wing out of the harness. Some nice long kiting sessions until my arms ached!

Sunday - more ground handling at Baildon, in a slightly too gusty wind. Useful to experience and I discovered my upper wind limit is around 20mph. After reverse launching on one occaision, I turned only to find loading the wing made for an interesting back peddling situation. Turned and landed the wing, and took note! Some nice long kiting times, in the harness this time. I also wondered why the wing was intially flying like a pig. I noticed a strange wrinkle in the wing shape. Landeed it to find a knot in the bridle. Duh! Relaunched and the familiar beautifully easy Nova wing handling returned. More thorough line pre flight line checking needed!

Proceedings and fun cut short by drops of rain, so packed up the wing pronto and dried it at home. Didn't stop the grinning though!

Monday 3rd January

Ground handling on Baildon Moor for a couple of hours. Best efforts yet! Reverse launching more stable and kiting controlled until turn forward. Successful turning back with intentional landings using the Cs and Ds risers. Good day!
